    Lasso Estimation of an Interval-Valued Multiple Regression Model

    A multiple interval-valued linear regression model considering all the cross-relationships between the mids and spreads of the intervals has been introduced recently. A least-squares estimation of the regression parameters has been carried out by transforming a quadratic optimization problem with inequality constraints into a linear complementary problem and using Lemke's algorithm to solve it. Due to the irrelevance of certain cross-relationships, an alternative estimation process, the LASSO (Least Absolut Shrinkage and Selection Operator), is developed. A comparative study showing the differences between the proposed estimators is provided

    La agenesia lumbosacra es una malformación congénita muy rara que forma parte del síndrome de regresión caudal; su incidencia es de un caso por cada 25,000 nacidos vivos y es más frecuente en los hijos de madres diabéticas. Se comunica el caso de un neonato masculino de dos días de vida extrauterina atendido en el Hospital Universitario Dr. José Eleuterio González, con malformaciones en el segmento corporal inferior. Con el estudio radiográfico se comprobó el diagnóstico de agenesia lumbosacra. La familia desconocía los tipos de malformaciones o enfermedades hereditarias en su árbol genealógico; el estudio de cariotipo no demostró alteraciones (46 XY), al igual que la determinación de hemoglobina glucosilada a la madre. En el ecocardiograma se identificó foramen oval permeable y miocardiopatía hipertrófica sin repercusión hemodinámica. Debido a su complejidad clínica, el tratamiento para la agenesia lumbosacacra debe abordarse con un equipo médico multidisciplinario para identificar cualquier alteración anatómica y funcional

    Quasi-exactly Solvable Lie Superalgebras of Differential Operators

    In this paper, we study Lie superalgebras of 2×22\times 2 matrix-valued first-order differential operators on the complex line. We first completely classify all such superalgebras of finite dimension. Among the finite-dimensional superalgebras whose odd subspace is nontrivial, we find those admitting a finite-dimensional invariant module of smooth vector-valued functions, and classify all the resulting finite-dimensional modules.     Masa muscular, fuerza isométrica y dinámica en las extremidades inferiores de niños y adolescentes con síndrome de Down

    En general se ha observado que las personas con síndrome de Down (SD) tienen valores inferiores de fuerza muscular comparados con personas sin SD. También existe un déficit de masa muscular en los adultos con SD comparados con otros sin SD. Sin embargo, ningún estudio hasta la fecha había evaluado esta masa muscular en población pediátrica. Nuestro estudio pretende poner de manifiesto si también a edades tempranas existe un déficit de masa muscular y además relacionar ambos valores. Los niños y adolescentes con y sin SD (15±3 y 14±3 años respectivamente) de nuestro estudio obtuvieron valores similares de masa muscular ajustada por talla y estadio puberal, pero el grupo con SD obtuvo valores inferiores de fuerza (p<0.05). Además de esto, el grupo con SD ejerció menos kilogramos de fuerza por cada kilogramo de masa muscular. Alguna causa fisiológica o de transmisión podría explicar esta falta de fuerza ya que, al menos en esta franja de edad no existe un déficit de masa muscular. Deberían incentivarse los programas de entrenamiento específicos para este tipo de población para comprobar si es posible un incremento en su fuerza muscular.Generally it has been observed that population with Down syndrome (DS) has lower levels of muscular strength compared with others without DS. It is also known a deficit between muscular mass between adults with and without DS. However, there are no studies until the date which evaluated muscular mass in paediatric populations. Our study pretends to show whether also in earlier ages it does exist a deficit in the muscular mass and also to relate both values. Children and adolescents with and without DS (15±3 y 14±3 years respectively) from the study had similar values of muscular mass adjusted by height and puberal status, but DS group obtained lower values in all strength parameters. In addition, DS group also performed less kilograms of strength by kilogram of muscular mass. Some physiological or transmission impairment could explain this lack of strength as it known that there are not deficit in the muscular mass. Specific and adapted for this population training programs should be promoted to check whether an enhancement in their muscular strength is possible.Peer Reviewe

    Effects of a thermal inversion experiment on STEM students learning and application of damped harmonic motion

    There are diverse teaching methodologies to promote both collaborative and individual work in undergraduate physics courses. However, few educational studies seek to understand how students learn and apply new knowledge through open-ended activities that require mathematical modeling and experimentation focused on environmental problems. In this work, we propose a novel home experiment to simulate the dynamics of a particulate under temperature inversion and model it as damped harmonic motion. Twenty six first year students enrolled in STEM majors answered six qualitative questions after designing and developing the experiment. These questions helped analyze the students epistemological beliefs about their learning process of physics topics and its applications. Results showed that this type of open-ended experiments could facilitate the students understanding of physics phenomena. In addition, this experiment showed that it could help physics professors to promote students epistemological development by giving their students the opportunity to search for different sources of knowledge and becoming self-learners instead of looking at the professor as the epistemological authority. At the end, students described this activity as a positive experience that helped them realize alternative ways to apply physics topics in different contexts of their environment.Comment: 23 pages, 5 figure

    Crystallographic control of the fabrication of an extremely sophisticated shell surface microornament in the glass scallop Catillopecten

    The external surface microornament of the glass scallops Catillopecten natalyae and malyutinae is made by calcitic spiny projections consisting of a stem that later divides into three equally spaced and inclined branches (here called aerials). C. natalyae contains larger and smaller aerials, whereas C. malyutinae only secreted aerials of the second type. A remarkable feature is that aerials within each type are fairly similar in size and shape and highly co-oriented, thus constituting a most sophisticated microornament. We demonstrate that aerials are single crystals whose morphology is strongly controlled by the crystallography, with the stem being parallel to the c-axis of calcite, and the branches extending along the edges of the {104} calcite rhombohedron. They grow epitaxially onto the foliated prisms of the outer shell layer. The co-orientation of the prisms explains that of the aerials. We have developed a model in which every aerial grows within a periostracal pouch. When this pouch reaches the growth margin, the mantle initiates the production of the aerial. Nevertheless, later growth of the aerial is remote, i.e. far from the contact with the mantle.     Nilpotent integrability, reduction of dynamical systems and a third-order Calogero-Moser system

    We present an algebraic formulation of the notion of integrability of dynamical systems, based on a nilpotency property of its flow: It can be explicitly described as a polynomial on its evolution parameter. Such a property is established in a purely geometric-algebraic language, in terms both of the algebra of all higher-order constants of the motion (named the nilpotent algebra of the dynamics) and of a maximal Abelian algebra of symmetries (called a Cartan subalgebra of the dynamics). It is shown that this notion of integrability amounts to the annihilator of the nilpotent algebra being contained in a Cartan subalgebra of the dynamics. Systems exhibiting this property will be said to be nilpotent-integrable. Our notion of nilpotent integrability offers a new insight into the intrinsic dynamical properties of a system, which is independent of any auxiliary geometric structure defined on its phase space. At the same time, it extends in a natural way the classical concept of integrability for Hamiltonian systems. An algebraic reduction procedure valid for nilpotent-integrable systems, generalizing the well-known reduction procedures for symplectic and/or Poisson systems on appropriate quotient spaces, is also discussed. In particular, it is shown that a large class of nilpotent-integrable systems can be obtained by reduction of higher-order free systems. The case of the third-order free system is analyzed and a non-trivial set of third-order Calogero-Moser-like nilpotent-integrable equations is obtained

    Interaction Effects on the Magneto-optical Response of Magnetoplasmonic Dimers

    The effect that dipole-dipole interactions have on the magneto-optical (MO) properties of magnetoplasmonic dimers is theoretically studied. The specific plasmonic versus magnetoplasmonic nature of the dimer's metallic components and their specific location within the dimer plays a crucial role on the determination of these properties. We find that it is possible to generate an induced MO activity in a purely plasmonic component, even larger than that of the MO one, therefore dominating the overall MO spectral dependence of the system. Adequate stacking of these components may allow obtaining, for specific spectral regions, larger MO activities in systems with reduced amount of MO metal and therefore with lower optical losses. Theoretical results are contrasted and confirmed with experiments for selected structures
